Co-occurring Mental Health Disorders

Our expert clinicians here are AdCare have the ability to treat various co-occurring mental health disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar, depression, anxiety, and ADHD.

Chronic Medical Conditions

As a hospital setting, AdCare can treat some chronic medical conditions. Presently, we can accommodate those who struggle with co-occurring cardiac conditions, respiratory conditions that require oxygen, and those whose are wheelchair bound.

Our Staff & Credentials

AdCare’s staff is comprised of the region’s most highly qualified physicians, nurses, clinicians, nurse practitioners, counselors, case managers, and placement professionals. Approximately 50% of AdCare Hospital’s direct patient care staff is in recovery themselves. AdCare Hospital has a counselor-to-patient ratio of 1:8 for optimal individualized patient care. AdCare is LGBTQI welcoming and has ASL and bilingual staff.

Dr. Patrice M. Muchowski, Sr. VP of Clinical Services

Dr. Patrice M. Muchowski, Sr. Vice President of Clinical Services since 2018 and Vice President of Clinical Services since 1988, is also an associate in the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Department of Psychiatry and a clinical instructor in Harvard University’s Department of Psychology. Dr. Muchowski holds a doctor of science degree and a master of science degree from Boston University, in addition to the following professional certifications: National Certified Addiction Counselor (NAADAC), Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (CADAC), Master Addictions Counselor (MAC), and Proficiency in the Treatment of Alcohol and other Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders (APA).

Susan B. Hillis, LICSW, CADC-II, LADC-I, Vice President of Clinical Services

Susan B. Hillis, LICSW, CADC-II, LADC-I, has served as Treatment Director since 2006. Prior to being named Treatment Director, she was Director of Rehabilitation Services at AdCare Hospital and Director of AdCare Outpatient Services offices in Worcester and Boston, Massachusetts. Ms. Hillis received the Massachusetts Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors 2015 Robert Logue President’s Award for her support of MAADAC membership and her dedication to substance use treatment, recovery, and professional credentialing in Massachusetts. A former Board Member and Chair of the Massachusetts Professional Recovery System (MPRS), she currently oversees clinical practicums for students in the Addiction Counselor Education (ACE) Program at AdCare, and provides clinical supervision for students in MSW Programs at a number of schools. Ms. Hillis presents frequently on substance-use related topics locally, regionally, and nationally. She holds a master’s degree in social work from Boston College, and an undergraduate degree in music therapy from Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA.

Mohammad Alhabbal, MD, Medical Director

Mohammad Alhabbal, MD, Medical Director, is certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) and the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), as well as a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). A graduate of the Damascus University Medical School in Damascus, Syria, Dr. Alhabbal completed his Family Medicine Residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, Hospitalist Division. Dr. Alhabbal is also a family practitioner at 200 Lincoln Street Primary Care in Worcester, Massachusetts.

What to Expect

Prospective Patients

At AdCare, we have 3 co-ed detox units, two with 26 beds and one with 24 beds, for a total of 76 detox beds. Average stay is 5 to 7 days, depending on the severity of the withdrawal symptoms and the substances used. We provide 34 beds for our inpatient rehabilitation program. The average length of stay is 7 to 10 days.

Arrival

AdCare hospital has a team of drivers who travel all over New England and New York to pick up and bring home patients. Prior to admission, patients complete an intake assessment over the phone. This helps the doctor and clinical team understand the patient’s substance abuse, medical conditions, psychiatric conditions, past treatment episodes and current medications. On the first full day they will meet with a counselor for an assessment.

Meals

Detox patients will have their meals brought to the unit. Rehab patients will go the cafeteria for their meals. Patients have meal options and the hospital can accommodate dietary restrictions. There is also a dietitian on staff.

Housing details

Housing consists of 3 co-ed detox units. There are 2 people per room, and 2 rooms share a connected bathroom. Laundry machines are available on-site and daily housekeeping is provided.

Technology

Cellphones are not allowed and are locked up upon admission. Computers, iPads or tablets, iPods, MP3 players or radios are also prohibited.

For Families

Programming

Individual Family Sessions are arranged through the patient’s counselor. Sessions help family members gather additional information at the time of admission and assist the family in addressing individual concerns as the patient prepares for discharge.

Family and Friends Support Group AdCare Hospital hosts a Friends and Family Night every Thursday for anyone with a loved one in treatment at AdCare Hospital. Facilitated by an experienced professional, this group is also open to the community. Meetings offer ongoing, therapeutic support in a group-mentoring setting.

Visiting your loved one

Individual family sessions may be arranged through the patient’s counselor. A Family Educational Program is also available for family members of patients in detox or rehab treatment, and is held every Saturday at 10 a.m. The family members participate in an hour-and-a-half educational session, followed by visiting and lunch from 11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. A family wrap-up is available for those with loved ones in rehab only.

Clinical Care

Individual Therapy

Patients participate in a daily treatment program to increase their understanding of addiction and their continuing care needs. The patient’s daily schedule consists of a variety of activities such as educational groups, an introduction to self-help, preparatory counseling, motivational groups, and family educational and counseling sessions for significant others. Management of co-occurring disorders can be initiated as indicated.

Depending on your level of care, you will participate in individual therapy for 50 minutes, 1 to 2 times a week. A variety of different treatment modalities are used, including but not limited to:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Group Therapy

During your treatment at AdCare, you will attend group therapy several times a day, depending on your level of care. All group sessions are separated by gender to best address gender-specific issues such as grief, trauma, seeking safety, and healthy relationships. Below are some of our group therapy offerings:

  • Dual-Diagnosis Group (available at inpatient rehab level of care)
  • Gender-specific groups
  • Inpatient Detox – groups meet once per week
  • Inpatient Rehab – groups meet twice per week
  • Chronic Pain Group
  • Young Adult Group: ages 18 to 25

Alternative Psycho-Educational, Supportive, & Expressive Therapies

Additional treatment interventions are offered to therapeutically support your overall care and wellbeing. Below are a few of our noteworthy offerings:

  • 12-Step based treatment
  • Access to Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings on-site
  • Arts and crafts classes
