AdCare has a strong open door visitation policy and encourages families and friends to be present and involved in their loved one’s recovery. Co-occurring Mental Health Disorders

Clinicians at AdCare Rhode Island are able to treat patients with co-occurring mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.

Chronic Medical Conditions & Physical Challenges

AdCare Rhode Island is equipped to care for medically compromised patients, although patients with chronic or acute medical conditions are accepted on a case-by case basis. Patients with conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, seizures, or other managed conditions are typically accepted. Every unit has ADA-compliant, handicap rooms available and everything is wheelchair-accessible. If the patient is not ambulatory they need to have their own device to get around, although the facility does have wheelchairs available for emergencies.

Our Staff & Credentials

Our highly trained and knowledgeable multidisciplinary team includes medical doctors, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, psychologists, therapists, treatment assistants, and a doctor of acupuncture. Patients meet with a clinician within the first 24 hours of admission. Therapists are all either working towards licensure or already licensed by the state, including licensed chemical dependency professionals (LCDPs), licensed mental health counselors (LMHCs), and masters-level licensed clinical social workers. All of our staff are trained and able to deliver addiction treatment. Some of their specialties include trauma-informed therapy, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and AcuDetox.

AdCare Rhode Island has a counselor-to-patient ratio of 1:5, for optimal individualized patient care. We are in the process of training and growing a competent LGBTQI program. We are also working toward increasing the diversity of staff as we expand and develop.

David W. Hillis, President and CEO, AdCare

David W. Hillis, Sr., is President and Chief Executive Officer of AdCare, Inc., the parent corporation of AdCare Hospital of Worcester, Inc., of which he is also Chairman and Chief Executive officer. Hillis, Sr., maintains numerous professional affiliations in the fields of both hospital administration and alcoholism and drug abuse. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (and former Chairman), a Fellow in the American College of Addiction Treatment Administrators, and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is a member of the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems, Addiction Treatment Committee.

Fred A. Trapassi, Jr., Chief Executive Officer of Rhode Island Operations

Fred A. Trapassi, Jr., began his career with Phoenix House in May of 2000 as Program Director for adolescent residential treatment services at Phoenix House Academy, Wallum Lake. In 2007 he was promoted to Vice President and Senior Program Director for Rhode Island Operations, with direct oversight of 11 programs throughout the state. Trapassi recently received the 2015 Rhode Island Labor Assistance Professionals Award for providing help and compassionate care to members of the associated unions and their families. Trapassi has also received the prestigious Jefferson Award for public service to a local community, the Nyswander Dole (Marie) Award for treatment advocacy, and the Brown University Howard K. Swearer Award for his work as a VISTA volunteer and street outreach worker, addressing the needs of runaway youth and the homeless from 1986 to 2000.

David W. Hillis, Jr., Vice President of Outpatient Operations

David W. Hillis, Jr., Vice President of Outpatient Operations, oversees the development of AdCare outpatient services clinics, located throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Hillis, Jr., who has worked in the healthcare field since 1988, has also served as Director of Outpatient Services and as an Outpatient Therapist at AdCare Hospital. He received a B.S. degree in Psychology and a M.S. degree in Psychology (Mental Health Counseling) from Salem State College. Hillis, Jr., is also a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and a Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (CADAC-II), as well as a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (LADC-I).

Dr. Patrice M. Muchowski, VP of Clinical Services

Dr. Patrice M. Muchowski, Vice President of Clinical Services since 1988, is also an associate in the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Department of Psychiatry and a clinical instructor in Harvard University’s Department of Psychology. Dr. Muchowski holds a Doctor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree from Boston University, in addition to the following professional certifications: National Certified Addiction Counselor (NAADAC), Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (CADAC), Master Addictions Counselor (MAC), and Proficiency in the Treatment of Alcohol and other Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders (APA).

Jessica Elliott, MA, CAGS, LMHC, LCDP, Clinical Director

Jessica Elliott is a graduate of Rhode Island College with degrees in Psychology and Chemical Dependency/Addiction Studies. She holds a master’s degree from Salve Regina University in Holistic Therapy and received her CAGS in Mental Health in 2013. Elliott is certified as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Licensed Chemical Dependency Professional, Expressive and Creative Arts Facilitator, Motivational Interviewing Facilitator, and Yoga Instructor. She has worked in the field as a clinician since 2005. Prior to joining the AdCare team, Elliott held various clinical leadership positions for a large behavioral health organization. As Clinical Director, she is now providing patient care as well as training and clinical oversight to our staff.

Dr. Ronald F. Pike, Medical Director

Dr. Ronald F. Pike, Medical Director is a recent past president of the Massachusetts Society of Addiction Medicine (MSAM); a past director of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM)’s New England Region, and a member of ASAM’s national board. In addition to his duties at AdCare Hospital, Dr. Pike is on staff at University of Massachusetts Memorial Health Care Center and Worcester Medical Center. He is also an affiliate of the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Family and Community Medicine Department and an associate in its Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Pike graduated Assumption College, Worcester, MA, University of Rome, IT, Medical School, and completed his residency in Medicine at Carney Hospital in Boston., MA.

Raymond J. Mis, Medical Director

Dr. Raymond Mis is a Doctor of Osteopathy and is certified in both Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine by the American College of Osteopathic Medicine. He received his medical degree from The New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1988 and currently serves on their faculty as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Norwalk Hospital, an affiliate of Yale University, where he was named “Top First Year Resident” in 1990. He was previously the Chief of the Department of Gastroenterology at Kent County Hospital in Warwick, RI and completed the ASAM Buprenorphine Course for Office-Based Treatment of Opioid Use Disorders by the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. He is passionate about helping anyone in need and has a special talent in reaching those suffering from substance use disorders. Dr. Raymond was voted one of the top gastroenterologists in the State of Rhode Island by his peers in Rhode Island Monthly Magazine in May 2000 and April 2007, and was selected as one of the “Best Doctors in America” in 2009, 2010, 2013, and 2014.

1. Medical Director, Michael Coburn M.D. American Board of Aesthetic Medicine (ABAM).

AdCare Rhode Island’s medical director graduated from the Dartmouth – Brown Program in Medicine in 1988, completed a surgical residency program in 1995, published numerous articles in prestigious surgical journals, and presented at many national and international surgical meetings.

He established a successful private practice as a general, vascular, and bariatric surgeon for 22 years. While a staff surgeon, served as the local liaison to the American Cancer Society, headed the Cancer Committee and Tumor Board for 10 years, and established the hospital’s Bariatric Program. In 2014 completed a 2-year apprenticeship in Addiction Medicine and passed the American Addiction Medicine Boards.

He as served as the Medical Director of 2 methadone clinics for 5 years and became the Medical Director at Adcare RI on January 1, 2016. Presently an active member of the American Board of Addiction Medicine, American Society of Addiction Medicine, Rhode Island Medical Society, and Rhode Island Society of Addiction Medicine.

2. Enhanced Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)

In addition to the standard opioid and alcohol detox protocols, AdCare Rhode Island has established a unique set of enhanced MAT protocols for patients suffering with opioid use disorder. While inpatient, all individuals are provided the information for and can initiate on any one of the following MAT protocols: suboxone maintenance therapy, naltrexone/vivitrol treatment, and methadone maintenance treatment (special Rhode Island State waiver obtained). In addition, there is an inpatient opportunity for patients currently on methadone maintenance, who are otherwise doing well in recovery, to rapidly detox from high doses of methadone and transition to either suboxone or vivitrol over the course of 4 weeks.

4. Statewide Continuum of Treatment - Outpatient Locations

AdCare Rhode Island understands that individualized treatment is necessary for successful recovery and we are prepared to treat patients at any point in the recovery process. Along with our North Kingstown inpatient facility, AdCare Rhode Island provides intensive outpatient treatment and general outpatient treatment in three locations across the State. Our offices are in Portsmouth, Greenville, and South Kingstown Rhode Island.

We pride ourselves on offering a full continuum of care; patients may enter inpatient treatment and step down to intensive outpatient treatment and then into general outpatient treatment over the course of weeks or months. Patients may also begin in an outpatient level of care and enter inpatient treatment if in need of more structure or medical intervention. If a person is unsure what he or she needs for treatment, AdCare offers assessments conducted by a licensed, qualified clinician in each of the outpatient locations.

AdCare Rhode Island is an in-network provider for many major insurance carriers and Rhode Island Medicaid. If we’re not an in-network provider for you, you may be able to use out-of-network benefits to help cover the cost of treatment. AdCare Rhode Island also accepts private payments for those who do not have coverage, or if your insurance stops funding, to ensure you can get the care you need with us. Our admissions team is available to assist with all your insurance and payment needs.

6. Case Management/Discharge Planning

AdCare Rhode Island strongly advocates for continued treatment upon discharge to help achieve continued success in recovery. Discharge planning at AdCare begins on day one. During treatment our dedicated staff and recovery coaches work with each patient to assess individual needs and begin connecting the patient with appropriate community resources. We work closely with area medical, mental health and substance use providers as well as sober living homes and other supportive services in order to provide a seamless transition for clients returning to their communities.

Our North Kingstown facility offers detox/stabilization, short-term residential and on-site enhanced MAT induction. Our treatment facility here at AdCare Rhode Island offers our clients state of the art substance abuse treatment and drug rehabilitation 24/7. AdCare employs nurses who specialize in the treatment of patients who are chemically dependent on drugs, alcohol or other substances.

Our nurses are trained in mental health as well as general medicine allowing our facility to treat dually diagnosed patients with underlying mental health or behavioral health issues. Detoxing from drugs or alcohol can be an extremely difficult, but necessary phase of the recovery process. A variety of complications can present themselves during this challenging period and utilizing the supervision and skills of our highly specialized AdCare nursing staff will make the detox safe and comfortable. Care, compassion, and above all experience, are critical elements for a successful intervention and detoxification, characteristics that are embraced by all of AdCare Rhode Islands nursing staff.

  • AdCare RI is located on 22 acres of tranquil, secluded woodlands in Southern Rhode Island that boasts home to a variety of animals and other wild life.
  • AdCare has been completely renovated over the last 5 years bringing the comforts of home to a treatment facility designed to offer patients the most conducive setting to individual and family treatment.
  • Our housekeeping staff is here to serve new patients upon admission and throughout their stay with us.
  • Food service at AdCare is taken seriously, employing a consulting dietician that takes nutrition and taste to the next level. If you are what you eat, food can help to heal a patient and proper balance of nutrition can help with a patient’s recovery.

10. Specialized Group Work

  • Community Night
    • AdCare Rhode Island holds a monthly Community Night open to patient families, the larger community and guests at each of its outpatient locations. This meeting, which is free of charge and open to the public, invites friends and family of those struggling with substance use to receive support and education from a licensed clinician.
  • First Responders
    • AdCare Rhode Island has clinicians who are trained in working with First Responders. AdCare RI maintains relationships with local employee assistance programs, police and fire, and military veterans’ programs. Our clinicians are experienced in working with First Responders and can tailor treatment to the men and women who protect and serve our community.

Our admission process is quick and easy, and usually takes an hour or less to complete.

Location

AdCare Rhode Island is located on over 20 acres set amongst the woods in New England. It is very peaceful with no city noises, and there are many opportunities for the clients to take walks, run, or just be in nature with the wildlife that surrounds the campus. It is located 20 minutes away from TF Green Airport. The rooms at AdCare Rhode Island have a condo-like atmosphere with brand-new, freshly painted windows to enjoy the outdoor scenery.

Meals

AdCare Rhode Island has a beautiful, scenic dining hall where three delicious, healthy meals are served a day. Accommodations are made for special diets if needed, and patients have the option of scheduling a personal appointment with the nutritionist. Each residential unit has a kitchenette where snacks and beverages are available.

Housing details

AdCare Rhode Island has a detox/crisis stabilization unit and two standard residential units. The detox/crisis stabilization unit has 23 beds, one residential unit has 23 beds, and the smaller residential unit has 13 beds. All residential units are lined with beautiful artwork. Usually, each room is equipped with 2 beds, 2 bureaus, 2 bedside tables, and a private bathroom inside the room. The residential wings are co-ed; gender is only separated by rooms. Private rooms are available at no additional cost for transgender patients or other patients with a demonstrated clinical need for a private room. Each unit has a kitchenette with snacks (popsicles, cereals, etc.) and beverages (lemonade, coffee, etc.). There is a lounge on each unit which has a television, board games, and art supplies for patients to enjoy at their leisure. Laundry machines and detergent are available on-site for patient use. Housekeeping services will clean their rooms daily and will wash linens regularly.

Recreational Activities & Outings

In their free time, patients can watch television, play board games, or create art in the lounge; exercise in the beautiful gym facility or outdoors; play basketball on the court; play cornhole or frisbee outside; or participate in a drumming group (offered for an hour every other week; led by a drummer with 26-29 different types of drums). In the gym, patients can exercise on the treadmill or elliptical, or they can use the free weights, weight machine, or exercise ball. A treatment assistant will be in the gym to assist if needed.

Technology

Because connectivity is so important, patients may bring and use their electronic devices during free hours. We provide free Wi-Fi to all patients and guests.

For Families

Programming

AdCare Rhode Island has a family day on Sundays, where visiting families and other loved ones participate in discussions with clinicians, visit with their loved one, and engage in family therapy sessions. On the last Wednesday of every month, the facility hosts a family community night with Dr. Colbern, which is open to the public. Meetings may include learning about how to get loved ones into treatment or listening to the experience of alumni or their families. These meetings often function as a support group for the individuals who attend.

Visiting your loved one

AdCare Rhode Island residential has an open door visitation policy and strongly encourages patients’ families and loved ones to be as involved as possible. If they want a family therapy session, they are encouraged to call ahead of time so that the clinicians can allot time to meet with the patient and their family/loved ones. Children are welcome to visit as well, and the meditation room at AdCare has coloring books and toys for children who are visiting. During your loved one’s treatment, we can work with you to plan a visit. Your loved one’s treatment team will provide you with all of the information you need to schedule your visit.

Clinical Care

Individual Therapy

Depending on your level of care, you will participate in individual therapy for 50 minutes, 1 to 2 times a week. A variety of different treatment modalities are used, including but not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Motivational Interviewing (MI).

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)

AdCare Rhode Island Is authorized to administer Vivitrol injections, naltrexone, and Suboxone. Depending on the patient’s needs, the facility can also administer psychiatric medications.

Trapassi has also received the prestigious Jefferson Award for public service to a local community, the Nyswander Dole (Marie) Award for treatment advocacy, and the Brown University Howard K. Swearer Award for his work as a VISTA volunteer and street outreach worker, addressing the needs of runaway youth and the homeless from 1986 to 2000.

David W. Hillis, Jr., Vice President of Outpatient Operations

David W. Hillis, Jr., Vice President of Outpatient Operations, oversees the development of AdCare outpatient services clinics, located throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Hillis, Jr., who has worked in the healthcare field since 1988, has also served as Director of Outpatient Services and as an Outpatient Therapist at AdCare Hospital. He received a B.S. degree in Psychology and a M.S. degree in Psychology (Mental Health Counseling) from Salem State College. Hillis, Jr., is also a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and a Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (CADAC-II), as well as a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (LADC-I).

Dr. Patrice M. Muchowski, VP of Clinical Services

Dr. Patrice M. Muchowski, Vice President of Clinical Services since 1988, is also an associate in the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Department of Psychiatry and a clinical instructor in Harvard University’s Department of Psychology. Dr. Muchowski holds a Doctor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree from Boston University, in addition to the following professional certifications: National Certified Addiction Counselor (NAADAC), Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (CADAC), Master Addictions Counselor (MAC), and Proficiency in the Treatment of Alcohol and other Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders (APA).

Jessica Elliott, MA, CAGS, LMHC, LCDP, Clinical Director

Jessica Elliott is a graduate of Rhode Island College with degrees in Psychology and Chemical Dependency/Addiction Studies. She holds a master’s degree from Salve Regina University in Holistic Therapy and received her CAGS in Mental Health in 2013. Elliott is certified as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Licensed Chemical Dependency Professional, Expressive and Creative Arts Facilitator, Motivational Interviewing Facilitator, and Yoga Instructor. She has worked in the field as a clinician since 2005. Prior to joining the AdCare team, Elliott held various clinical leadership positions for a large behavioral health organization. As Clinical Director, she is now providing patient care as well as training and clinical oversight to our staff.

Dr. Ronald F. Pike, Medical Director

Dr. Ronald F. Pike, Medical Director is a recent past president of the Massachusetts Society of Addiction Medicine (MSAM); a past director of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM)’s New England Region, and a member of ASAM’s national board. In addition to his duties at AdCare Hospital, Dr. Pike is on staff at University of Massachusetts Memorial Health Care Center and Worcester Medical Center. He is also an affiliate of the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Family and Community Medicine Department and an associate in its Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Pike graduated Assumption College, Worcester, MA, University of Rome, IT, Medical School, and completed his residency in Medicine at Carney Hospital in Boston., MA.

Raymond J. Mis, Medical Director

Dr. Raymond Mis is a Doctor of Osteopathy and is certified in both Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine by the American College of Osteopathic Medicine. He received his medical degree from The New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1988 and currently serves on their faculty as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Norwalk Hospital, an affiliate of Yale University, where he was named “Top First Year Resident” in 1990. He was previously the Chief of the Department of Gastroenterology at Kent County Hospital in Warwick, RI and completed the ASAM Buprenorphine Course for Office-Based Treatment of Opioid Use Disorders by the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. He is passionate about helping anyone in need and has a special talent in reaching those suffering from substance use disorders. Dr. Raymond was voted one of the top gastroenterologists in the State of Rhode Island by his peers in Rhode Island Monthly Magazine in May 2000 and April 2007, and was selected as one of the “Best Doctors in America” in 2009, 2010, 2013, and 2014.
