About

Care for Co-Occurring Mental Health Disorders

The board-certified psychiatrists and doctors on staff are able to evaluate for co-occurring disorders and to prescribe medications if necessary.

Chronic Medical Conditions & Physical Challenges

Laguna is equipped to care for medically compromised patients and patients with physical health challenges. The medical director will review medical records prior to admission and determine if Laguna’s sub-acute environment is equipped to treat the presenting medical problem in conjunction with the addiction to drugs.

If you are diabetic, you will receive a nutritional consult from a registered dietitian. The nursing staff will help you monitor your blood sugar, administer insulin if needed, and provide you with lots of education about a healthy diabetic diet. The chef knows that when you come in with certain conditions, he needs to design a specific diet designed for you.

If you suffer from pain issues, non-opioid medications that can be used for pain management include gabapentin, Lyrica, and NSAIDs. If we determine that your pain is related to an underlying issue such as a traumatic injury, neurological issue, or orthopedic issue, we may refer you to outside specialists or physical therapy (at your expense) to ensure you get the appropriate care and that you are as comfortable as possible during your treatment.

Individual Therapy

Depending on your level of care, you will participate in individual therapy for 50 minutes, 1-2 times per week. A variety of different treatment modalities are used including but not limited to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing (MI).

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is reserved for those who have been in treatment at Laguna for some time whose physician and therapist agree that they are ready for this intensive level of work.

Group Therapy

During your treatment at Laguna, you will attend group therapy several times a day, depending on your level of care. All group sessions are separated by gender to address gender-specific issues that may be present within topics such as grief, trauma, and relationships.

Specific curriculum is available to address specialized needs in target populations such as LGBTQ, first responders, and Native Americans.

Psychoeducational, Supportive, Expressive, & Alternative Therapies

Additional treatment interventions are offered to therapeutically support your overall care and wellbeing. Below are a few of our noteworthy offerings:

  • 12-Step recovery groups.
  • 12-Step alternatives: SMART Recovery, WellBriety.
  • Therapeutic recreation: A recreational therapist will work with you several times a week, using music, art, outings, and physical conditioning as ways to improve physical, mental, social, and/or emotional functioning.
  • Yoga and meditation: At Laguna, a master’s-level therapist with advanced yoga training provides therapeutic yoga sessions. Weekly gender-specific yoga sessions are held in the yoga center or outside when weather permits.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) uses medications along with therapy to treat substance use disorders, particularly opioid use disorders and alcohol use disorders. Medications may sometimes also be used to simultaneously manage pain.

Programming

Family therapy is available if the patient and family members both agree. Additionally, our team can help you find Al-Anon, Narc-Anon, and other family support groups in your area.
