You don’t go to Fort Lauderdale to spend the entire time indoors. Recovery First is able to capitalize on its pristine surroundings, and provides patients with access to the historical and popular Fort Lauderdale beaches. Patients are encouraged to roam the beaches in their free time, relaxing in the gentle Atlantic surf, practicing yoga on the white sand, or reflecting during an afternoon walk.

At Recovery First Fort Lauderdale East (RFFLE), we pride ourselves on our Veteran’s Choice Program (VCP). Working with the Department of Veterans Affairs, Recovery First’s VCP helps to provide struggling veterans with inpatient and outpatient care. We also have a focus program for our Nation’s First responders.

Co-occurring Mental Health Disorders

The clinicians at Recovery First Fort Lauderdale recognize that addiction often exists alongside other treatable mental health issues. Through an integrated treatment approach, Recovery First is able to treat co-occurring and secondary mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and bipolar disorder.

At Recovery First Fort Lauderdale, our treatment team of professionals includes board-certified psychiatrists, case managers, therapists, an attending physician, behavioral health technicians, biomedical techs, and licensed vocational nurses. Master’s level therapists (LPC, LCSW, LMSW) lead experiential therapies, and our clinical team is staffed with master-level professionals and certified substance abuse counselors.

Approximately 40% of Recovery First’s staff members are in recovery, so they understand first-hand what it’s like to battle addiction and thrive in recovery. This gives the staff a level of compassion and empathy that is evident throughout the treatment process. Recovery First Fort Lauderdale has several staff members available who are fluent in Spanish, including a therapist who is also a veteran who has started a group specifically for Spanish-speaking veterans.

3. Healthcare Professionals Designated Program: Professionals Resource Network (PRN) and Intervention Project for Nurses (IPN).

Designated therapist that provides individual and group therapy to the healthcare professionals at all locations. Same therapist follows patients and ensures referral protocols including required monitoring is completed; to assist professional successfully transition back to work.

Both, PRN and IPN are programs designated by Florida's Impaired Practitioners Programs that consult with the Department of Health (DOH) in all matters relating to practitioner impairment.

4. Medical Director, Richard Seely, M.D. has 5 board certifications including adult and child psychiatry and addictionology.

Dr. Seely is secretary to the Florida Society of addiction medicine and is the primary psychiatrist for NFL, NBA, and the Florida Bar association. Additionally, Dr. Seely is 30 years clean and sober and still an active participant in his 12-step organization. He brings with him Chuck Smith D.O. in addictionology and Linda Dolin M.D. in internal medicine and a team of board certified APRN’s in psychiatry, adult and family medicine.

6. Community based intensive outpatient program (IOP) and transportation is offered to patients that are within a certain radius of Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood.

What to Expect

Prospective Patients

Tours of Recovery First are welcomed and encouraged, and can be scheduled by contacting our admissions office.

Arrival

Our admission process is quick and easy, and usually takes an hour or less to complete. Patients are picked up from the airport by a member of the Recovery First staff. Upon admission, depending on the time of their arrival, patients will be given a warm meal and the opportunity to contact their family, followed by a tour of the facility and directed to complete admission paperwork. Following this, patients will be assessed to determine the level of care needed – detox, partial hospitalization treatment, residential treatment, etc.

Meals

Patients are provided 3 meals daily prepared by each individual.

Housing details

At RFFLE, patients will find a 3-story apartment-like building with 33 apartments, each with its own kitchen and bathroom. There are 11 apartments per floor with males residing on the first 2 floors and females on the third floor. 2-3 residents are housed in each apartment.

Recreational Activities & Outings

RFFLE has a gym on-site as well as a pool. The facility is also within walking distance to the beach. Residents may go on walks to the beach. Those interested may attend church on Sundays. RFFLE also takes residents out into the community as requested for haircut services, nail services, etc.

Technology

Because connectivity is so important, patients may bring and use their electronic devices at Recovery First during free hours. We provide free Wi-Fi to all patients and guests.

For Families

Programming

The family program is held twice a month two days a week, always on Fridays and Saturdays. All family programs are held at Recovery First, Hollywood. Family programming entails psycho-education discussing the science of addiction and the disease concept of addiction, which is often new to the loved ones of patients. Therapists also participate in individual family work in the afternoon.

Visiting your Loved One

During your loved one’s treatment, we can work with you to plan a visit. Your loved one’s treatment team will provide you with all of the information you need to schedule your visit.

Clinical Care

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy sessions are typically one hour in duration and held 5 days a week with your primary therapist. A variety of different treatment modalities are used, including but not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is reserved for those who have been in treatment for some time and whose physician and therapist agree that this intensive level of work is appropriate for the patient.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

MAT combines pharmacotherapy with counseling and behavioral therapeutic approaches to treat substance use disorders such as alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder. Naltrexone is the only MAT medication administered at Recovery First Fort Lauderdale.

Group Therapy

Group therapy sessions are one hour in length and occur 5 to 6 times a day, 7 days a week, but can vary depending on your level of care. Below are some of our group therapy offerings:

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Pain Management Groups
  • Nutrition Groups

Alternative Psycho-Educational, Supportive, & Expressive Therapies

Additional therapeutic interventions are offered to complement your overall care and wellbeing. Below are a few of our noteworthy offerings:

  • Music Therapy
  • Art Therapy
  • Mindfulness: Mindfulness and meditation group occurs at 6 AM for sunrise at the beach. The beach is walking distance from the facility.
  • Yoga: Yoga occurs every morning from 9 to 10 AM.
