What is the AUDIT Assessment?

The AUDIT or Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test is a 10-question screening tool developed by the World Health Organization to assess alcohol consumption, behaviors, and problems associated with alcohol use.

How Should I Use the AUDIT Alcohol Assessment?

A clinician may use it as an interviewing tool or you may take and score it yourself. The AUDIT screening should not be used to self-diagnose. When answering the questions use the last year as the time period. When referring to alcohol or beverages, use a standard drink size as the basis for determining the amount. One standard drink sizes is one of the following:

• 12 fl oz of regular beer.
• 8-9 fl oz of malt liquor.
• 5 fl oz of wine.
• 5 fl oz shot of distilled spirits (gin, rum, tequila, vodka, whiskey).

Each answer is associated with a number between 0 and 4. Keep track of your score as you will need to add them together at the end. Please note that some questions won’t have 5 answer choices.

How is the AUDIT Assessment Scored?

Each answer has a number associated with it from 0 to 4. At the end of the questionnaire, add the score to get a total number. A total score of 8 or more may indicate hazardous or harmful alcohol use and possible dependence. Results and cutoffs may vary based on population type such as age. A higher score simply indicates a higher likelihood of hazardous or harmful drinking and potential for dependence.
