AAC’s Chief Medical Officer on Addressing Sleep Issues in Patients with SUD
AAC’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Lawrence Weinstein, was featured in an illuminating article in Behavioral Health Business magazine discussing how crucial support for sleep issues is for behavioral health treatment providers. Sleep disorders such as insomnia that lead to decreased sleep and sleep quality, have a bidirectional relationship with mental health: each worsens the other. The article emphasizes the commonality of sleep issues in patients with addiction and mental health disorders, with Weinstein stating that most patients struggle with some form of sleep disorder. Not treating sleep issues can leave too many patients without the crucial support they need to fully recover. Fortunately, as Weinstein mentions, often these issues can be treated successfully with a non-pharmacological approach: cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). Read the full article here.
