A Veteran’s battle doesn’t end upon the return home. They may hand in their rifle, but in many ways, the real battle is only beginning. In an op-ed for Homeland Magazine, Dr. Lucas Trautman, Medical Director at Oxford Treatment Center, explains the difficulties many Vets face as they reintegrate back into their civilian lives. According to Trautman, “Society asks its warriors to go to war but does not teach them how to return.” Trautman goes on to outline some of the ways that we as a society can better support our nation’s heroes who experience struggles at home, including creating ways to bring Veterans together through Veteran-led initiatives and programs; offering activities to help address trauma; and creating meaningful leadership and mentorship opportunities to give Veterans purpose and meaning in their lives after service.
