BCBS Coverage Levels and Plans

Understanding your Anthem BCBS Kentucky coverage for addiction treatments can be the first step toward choosing the recovery program that’s the right fit for you. Here, we’ll take a look at different types of Anthem BCBS Kentucky health insurance plan coverage to help you understand what to expect when it comes to using Anthem BCBS Kentucky for rehab.

There are several types of health insurance plans, including:3

  • Health Maintenance Organization (HMO): An HMO plan typically has a low monthly premium; however, HMOs limit coverage to care providers within your network. You may need to get a referral from your primary care provider (PCP) in order to receive specialized care. If you see a doctor out of network and it’s not a medical emergency, you may be responsible for the entire cost of your care.
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO): A PPO health insurance plan costs more monthly than an HMO but offers a preferred network of care providers and does not require members to get a referral from their PCP to see a specialist. If you see an out-of-network provider with a PPO plan, you may be responsible for a larger portion of the cost of your care than you would with an in-network provider.
  • Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO): This type of health insurance plan is a hybrid of an HMO and a PPO. Typically, an EPO offers more flexibility than an HMO plan at a lower monthly cost than a PPO plan. Like with a PPO, you won’t need to get a referral to see a specialist. However, you won’t have coverage if you choose to get non-emergency care outside the network.

There are also several coverage levels within Anthem BCBS Kentucky Health Insurance Marketplace plans, including:4

  • Bronze plans: This level of care has a higher deductible than other plans and covers about 60% of the cost of your treatment.
  • Silver plans: Silver level plans cover about 70% of your costs, and you are responsible for up to 30% of the cost of your care.
  • Gold plans: Gold plan members have a higher monthly premium than silver plans andthey will cover 80% of your healthcare costs.
  • Platinum plans: This level offers the lowest out-of-pocket cost (covering 90% of healthcare costs) and highest monthly premium cost.

Anthem BCBS Kentucky may fully or partially cover several levels of treatment, including:8

  • Detoxification: Medically assisted detoxification is sometimes needed to manage acute withdrawal symptoms safely stabilizing the patient through the use of medications and supervision. Most patients will need continued addiction treatment after detox to achieve long-term sobriety.
  • Inpatient/residential: Inpatient programs offer live-in treatment and 24/7 care. Patients often benefit from structured routine, individual and group therapy, medications for substance use disorder, peer support, and psychoeducation while in a residential treatment program.
  • Outpatient rehab treatment: Outpatient rehabilitation enables patients to receive much of the same kinds of treatment offered at inpatient facilities; however, patients return home after each treatment session. There may be several levels of outpatient care offered by a facility. Typically partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) require the most daily or weekly hours in treatment, followed by intensive outpatient care, and standard outpatient treatment.
  • Medications: Medications for substance use disorder may work to mitigate withdrawal symptoms or cravings, helping patients focus on their treatment and recovery.

Does Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of Kentucky Cover Mental Health & Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment?

Yes, an Anthem BCBS Kentucky insurance plan will offer full or partial coverage for co-occurring disorders (mental health issues that occur at the same time as substance use disorder).

The ACA requires insurance companies to cover mental health issues, including addiction and co-occurring disorders and the MHPAEA mandates that this coverage matches the coverage provided for other services.7,9
