Abstaining from alcohol during the first month of the year, commonly known as Dry January, has become an annual tradition that continues to gain participants each year.

Dr. Lawrence Weinstein, AAC’s chief medical officer, was interviewed by Bustle on the effects of Dry January that can take place after just one week. In addition to the physical benefits, Dr. Weinstein touched on the mental benefits that can arise:

“Eliminating alcohol for just one week can result in improved mental acuity – the ability to problem solve, make better decisions, learn, concentrate and even be creative” can take place after stopping alcohol use.
