What Addiction Treatment Does Tufts Health Plan Cover in Rhode Island

As you work through the recovery process, you’ll move through different levels of treatment. Your Tufts Health Plan may cover some or all of your treatment.1

Common types of addiction treatment that may be covered by Tufts include:2

  • Detoxification: Getting drugs and alcohol out of your system can cause health issues, and going through the detoxification process with a qualified treatment team can help make the process as comfortable and safe as possible.
  • Inpatient or residential treatment: During inpatient treatment, you’ll live at a treatment facility where you’ll have access to around-the-clock care.
  • Outpatient rehab treatment: This type of treatment includes partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs and allows you to return home daily instead of living at the treatment facility.
  • Counseling: Talking to a therapist or other mental health professional is an important part of both active treatment and aftercare.
  • Medications: Medications for substance use disorder are an important part of treatment and recovery for many people.3 If your care provider prescribes a medication to support your recovery, it may be partially or fully covered by your Tufts Health Plan.

Does Tufts Health Plan Cover Mental Health & Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment in Rhode Island?

Yes, Tufts Health Plan covers treatment for people with co-occurring disorders (also known as a dual diagnosis). This type of treatment can help people living with substance use disorder and other mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder.

Many people with addiction also suffer from other forms of mental illness for many reasons, such as shared risk factors like genetic vulnerabilities, stress, trauma, environment, or because of the direct influence of substance use on one’s mental health problems and vice versa (e.g., “self-medicating” with drugs or alcohol).

Research shows that simultaneous treatment of both conditions often results in better patient outcomes.
