Most alcohol and drug misuse hotlines are free, confidential services that provide resources, support, and information to people—and/or their loved ones—who are struggling with substance addiction and various behavioral and mental health concerns. While the majority of hotlines offer toll-free numbers, some also provide chat and/or messaging opportunities online or via phone.
Although each hotline is slightly different, most offer info and referrals on topics such as: addiction treatment info, rehab centers, support groups, payment options for treatment, insurance verification, community resources, and more.
Types of Texas Hotlines
Multiple types of Texas substance misuse hotlines are available, including:
- Local support hotlines, which offer resources and care near you, are typically backed by the local municipality or nearby nonprofit organizations.
- Hospital and treatment facility hotlines are often sponsored by treatment hospitals or rehab facilities. For example, American Addiction Centers offers a hotline related to its Dallas/Fort Worth-area rehab, namely Greenhouse Treatment Center.
- National- and state-funded hotlines provide information and direct you to treatment options. One option is offered through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline
- The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline offers 24/7, free, and confidential support for people in crisis. Chat features are available for Veterans and service members, Spanish speakers, and deaf or hard of hearing individuals.6

- Offering 24/7 referrals and advice to anyone experiencing a crisis, the Crisis Text Line deals with drug and alcohol addiction, suicidal impulses, family problems, and more.7

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) HelpLine
- This free, nationwide service offers information, resource referrals, and support to people living with a mental health condition, their family members and caregivers, mental health providers, and the public. The helpline is staffed Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET.8

Are All Texas Helpline Numbers Free?
Most drug hotline numbers in Texas are free, as are most addiction text lines. However, not all helplines are available 24/7. Some have specific hours of operation. If you call one and don’t get an answer, don’t give up. Simply reach out to a different helpline.
What Happens When You Call a Substance Abuse Hotline?
Calls to Texas substance misuse hotlines are usually answered by staff trained in crisis intervention regarding substance misuse, mental health issues, and/or other emergent situations. They will listen to you and offer support, perhaps including personalized treatment options, depending on your needs.
Sometimes, the advisor has struggled with substance misuse themselves, and they may have undergone treatment. So they often have firsthand experience and can understand any apprehension you might be feeling. That said, most call-center reps aren’t doctors, which means they can’t handle true medical emergencies nor distill medical advice.
Many hotlines will ask a series of questions to help determine exactly what kind of help you need. Questions might include:
- Are you interested in addiction treatment for yourself or a loved one?
- Are you having suicidal thoughts?
- Do you feel safe?
- Is this an emergency situation where someone’s life could be in danger?
- What substance(s) are you or your loved one struggling with?
- How long have you been using the substance, and how frequently do you use it?
- Do you have other mental or physical issues?
- Have you attended treatment in the past?
- Are you ready to begin treatment now or in the future?

When preparing to call an addiction hotline in Texas or elsewhere, you may want to think about how you’ll answer the aforementioned questions. Also consider what information you want obtain during the call. You might be seeking advice, information, and treatment options, or you may simply want a kind and empathetic ear to help you process the situation.
If you are ready to enter rehab, it can help to have some information on hand such as:
- Identification.
- Insurance information (if any).
- Any necessary paperwork regarding physical or mental conditions.
- Health history.
- A list of any medications you’re taking.

Is the Conversation Confidential When I Call a Substance Abuse Helpline?
Most of the time, you can remain anonymous when you call a drug addiction helpline, and you can choose how much or how little information you provide. In cases where you might be a danger to yourself or others, or if you are in danger due to a health issue such as an overdose, you may be asked to provide some personal information so that the advisor can get you the hands-on help you need.
However, even if you give your name, phone number, and address, the majority of hotlines will keep your information confidential. If you have any privacy concerns, bring them up at the beginning of the call.
Can I Text a Texas Substance Abuse Helpline Number Instead of Calling?
As noted above, some hotlines offer text support. Once you contact an addiction text line, it is very similar to calling a hotline. The advisor will likely ask similar questions, listen to you, and offer advice and support.

When Should I Call a Texas Substance Abuse Helpline?
Knowing when to call a drug hotline number isn’t always an easy decision. It’s normal to feel a little trepidation prior to the call.
