Do Rehabs in Ohio Accept Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS)?

Yes, many rehab centers in Ohio accept Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance plans. Due to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), all health insurance providers, including BCBS, must cover addiction treatment.1

If you have a BCBS plan that you purchased through the Health Insurance Marketplace, all of these plans cover substance use treatment as an essential health benefit,2 and the law provides coverage to people with plans acquired through an employer as well.1

However, the extent of coverage will vary depending on the specific health plan you are enrolled in and exactly what your plan includes.

Before enrolling in an addiction treatment program, it’s always a good idea to verify your insurance benefits and find an alcohol rehab center that is in network with your insurance provider. Choosing an in-network provider typically means you will pay less out of pocket.

What Addiction Treatment Does Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Ohio Cover?

When searching for a rehab center in Ohio, you will be able to choose from many different types of treatment programs. The best substance use disorder treatment program for you will depend on your circumstances. Some people respond best to an inpatient program, while others may do better with intensive outpatient treatment.

No matter what type of program you choose, you can expect to find some commonalities among alcohol rehabs in Ohio, including evidence-based approaches to treatment such as cognitive behavior therapy and medication-assisted treatment.

Your options for addiction treatment may include:3

  • Detoxification. Also known as detox, this is sometimes offered at the beginning of a substance use disorder program to help patients manage withdrawal symptoms. This process is overseen by medical professionals and may require the use of medication to help manage symptoms.
  • Inpatient or residential treatment. This involves living at the treatment facility for the duration of treatment. Patients in residential or inpatient treatment benefit from 24/7 support and supervision from treatment staff.
  • Outpatient rehab treatment. This allows patients to continue living at home during treatment visiting several times a week for treatment sessions.

Does Anthem BCBS of Ohio Cover Mental Health & Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment?

Yes, co-occurring disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield in Ohio. Just like substance use treatment, coverage for mental health services is also mandated by the ACA.1,2

When someone experiences a substance use disorder (SUD) and a mental health disorder simultaneously, this is commonly referred to as a dual diagnosis. Research has shown that when a dual diagnosis is present, simultaneous treatment of addiction and the co-occurring disorders generally delivers better outcomes.4

Cost of Rehab with Anthem BCBS of Ohio

How Much Does Rehab Cost with Anthem BCBS of Ohio?

The cost of alcohol rehab when using Anthem BCBS of Ohio depends on several factors, including the type of treatment program you enroll in, as well as the specifics of your individual Blue Cross Blue Shield health plan.

For example, inpatient or residential treatment programs typically cost more than outpatient programs, as food, lodging, and other amenities are included in the cost of the treatment program.

With most BCBS Ohio insurance plans, you can expect to be responsible for some out-of-pocket costs. When undergoing addiction treatment patients may be charged:5,6,7

  • A yearly deductible. Your deductible is a fixed amount per year you have to pay towards covered services before your health insurance plan will begin to pay.
  • A copayment or copay. This is a predetermined, fixed dollar amount that you are required to pay toward covered medical insurance. For example, you may be charged $30 at each visit to an outpatient clinic. Copayment amounts vary by plan; insurance policies with a higher monthly payment will often have a lower copay. Copayments do not count toward your deductible.
  • Co-insurance. Many insurance policies charge patients a co-insurance rate. Instead of paying a fixed dollar amount each visit, coinsurance is a percentage of the total cost of treatment. For example, if the co-insurance rate for a service is 20%, Anthem BCBS would cover the remaining 80%.

Health insurance plans also typically have an out-of-pocket maximum, which is the most you will have to pay in a calendar year. Once you spend this much for in-network medical care, your insurance plan will pay all remaining costs. This means no more copayments or co-insurance percentages. Out-of-pocket limits do not apply to monthly premiums or out-of-network services.8

Before enrolling in an addiction treatment program, it’s always a good idea to verify your insurance benefits and find an alcohol rehab center that is in-network with your insurance provider. Choosing an in-network provider typically means you will pay less out-of-pocket.
