Referring Patients to Rehab: A Guide for Veterans Affairs Social Workers
Veterans Affairs social workers are invaluable when it comes to assessing, treating, and advocating for Veterans with substance use disorder. However, VA facilities can’t always provide services that meet certain Veterans’ needs. When this happens, VA social workers can refer their clients to programs offered by Community Care Partners like American Addiction Centers (AAC).
This page will serve as a guide for VA social workers referring their clients to AAC facilities.
How Does the Veteran Referral Process Work At AAC?
If and when the VA is unable to provide addiction treatment to Veterans, we can pick up the slack. AAC facilities are part of the Community Care Network (CCN) and we’re proud to serve all Veterans, including those who are unemployed, disabled, or homeless.
Call to speak with our admissions team or fill out the form at the bottom of this page, and a local outreach coordinator will contact you.
Many patients benefit from the assistance of a Veteran Liaison to get approved care outside of the VA. Our experienced Veteran Liaisons—many of whom are Veterans themselves—are here to help Veterans and their advocates navigate the recovery process. This includes:
- Checking their VA enrollment status. If they’re not enrolled, we can guide them through the process.
- Helping get them an appointment for a mental health consult with their primary care physician (PCP).
- Helping them arrange travel and offer support, whether they come through one of our facilities or not.
Our Specialized Treatment Approach for Veterans
AAC is proud to offer Veterans our Salute to Recovery program. We understand that Veterans often face a range of concerns that can contribute to addiction, including:
- Stigma toward mental health issues.
- Co-occurring mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
- Combat-related injuries.
- Difficulties adjusting to civilian life.
- Trauma.
The Salute to Recovery program provides evidence-based care and uses a strengths-based approach to support lasting sobriety. We take a holistic approach to readiness, preparing clients for the daily work of recovery socially, physically, mentally, and spiritually.
American Addiction Centers is certified by PsychArmor and ComPsych.
Our admissions team is made up of Veterans and others who have spent years dedicated to helping those in the military recover from addiction.
Types of Addiction Treatment We Offer
We believe that each addiction treatment journey is unique, and we work closely with each of our clients to create a path that makes sense for their individual recovery needs.
Levels of treatment offered at our facilities include:
- Medical detox: Medical detox helps patients safely and comfortably get through withdrawal and prepare for continued treatment.
- Residential treatment: Our residential treatment programs offer Veterans peer and professional support while they live at one of our facilities, benefiting from a structured routine and 24/7 support.
- Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs): A PHP is an outpatient program that requires patients to visit the facility 5 days a week for treatment. PHPs can offer the flexibility that Veterans need to attend to work and home responsibilities while beginning their recovery.
- Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs): Our IOP offers more flexibility for Veterans, requiring them to visit the facility for treatment 3-5 times a week.
- Standard outpatient treatment: Standard outpatient treatment affords the highest degree of flexibility of all our treatment programs. The frequency of treatment sessions is determined by medical staff according to the patient’s needs.
- Sober living: Our sober living communities offer a supportive, sober environment for Veterans who are adjusting to sober life while enrolled in an outpatient treatment program.
In addition to our addiction treatment programs, we also offer primary mental health care in Florida at our River Oaks Treatment. We offer co-occurring disorder treatment, including treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, at each of our treatment facilities.
