Addiction Recovery – Wellness Curriculum
Key Features
Substance abuse can leave lasting damage on the mind, body, and spirit. Studies by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), American Diabetes Association, and numerous medical journals all report that people with addiction and mental health conditions have significantly higher mortality rates than the general population. Furthermore, these increased rates are mostly attributed to preventable medical conditions such as diabetes or cardiovascular, respiratory, or infectious diseases (including HIV).
The increased stress and poor nutrition associated with addiction are just two factors that significantly impair the immune system and brain’s function. Dr. Ralph E. Carson, RD, Ph.D states, “The brain only has so much reserve. The combination of substance abuse and neglect, in the form of poor eating habits or eating disorders, takes an even further toll on mental function. Fortunately, the brain is malleable, and with proper nutrients nerves are regenerated, proper circuitry is restored, neurotransmitters are replaced, and optimal brain functioning is possible.”
