Research indicates that remaining in treatment for the entire duration yields the best outcomes.1 Additionally, after formal treatment ends, an aftercare or ongoing treatment plan, designed to fit an individual’s needs, can reduce the risk of relapse.1 These programs may include continued therapy, mutual-help groups, and a sober living home or halfway house.

Sober living environments provide safe, substance-free residence, where individuals live together as they continue to work on their recovery. In Las Vegas, multiple sober living options offer various services such as peer support groups and employment assistance to give individuals autonomy and structure while they focus on remaining sober and getting their lives back on track.

What is a Sober Living Home?

Sober living residences are group homes that provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals recovering from drug or alcohol addiction.2 Residents commit to following certain rules, such as maintaining abstinence, paying rent and other fees, doing house chores, and participating in house meetings.3 In exchange, individuals can remain in a sober living home as long as they like; however, full independence is the ultimate goal.3

Individuals maintain responsibility for themselves in a sober living environment, which is an important step in the recovery process. It helps them regain their independence and autonomy while still giving them group support and accountability.

What is a Halfway House?

Though sober living homes and halfway houses may be terms used interchangeably to describe temporary substance-free residences, there are a few key differences. For one, halfway houses typically limit the amount of time an individual can stay because they are often owned or sponsored by the state. Sober living homes, on the other hand, depend on payment from residents and are therefore self-sustaining facilities.

Additionally, halfway houses often provide transitional residence to previously incarcerated individuals, where they can receive services to help them successfully and safely reintegrate into their communities.4 In Las Vegas, however, the term halfway houses refers to a group home specifically for individuals recovering from drug and alcohol addiction.5

Halfway houses—or any sober-living environment—can be incredibly beneficial for individuals who don’t have a supportive community to return to after treatment; those who have triggering home environments (including friends and family who use substances or homes where drugs and alcohol are present), which could lead to relapse; people who have relapsed after treatment in the past; or individuals who want to continue their success in recovery following treatment.

Sober Living and Halfway Houses in Nevada

Nevada recently gained new funding in 2021, to maximize state and local resources, provide guidance on building recovery homes, and improve access to sober housing and services so individuals can maintain recovery in a safe, affordable, and supportive environment.6  This came after a 2020 study that estimated that there were 106 recovery homes in Nevada.7

How Much Does Sober Living in Las Vegas Cost?

Prices for sober living and halfway houses in Las Vegas vary dramatically, depending on several factors, such as the residence you choose, the amenities offered, whether or not you have your own room, the length of time you stay, and what’s included. Most sober living homes charge an enrollment fee as well as monthly rent, which may or may not also include utilities.

Insurance plans generally don’t cover the costs of sober living, but you can pay out of pocket or take out a personal loan to fund sober living. You may also be eligible for grants or scholarships. For instance, the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) provides grants to cover 2 to 3 months of rent at fair market value for individuals who qualify.8

How to Find Sober Living in Las Vegas

Addiction treatment works best when it’s focused on the individual.1 This includes an individualized aftercare plan, which, for some, includes sober living, where they can stay on their own but with the help of a sober network. Sober living can provide the ideal balance of structure and independence.

When searching for a sober living residence, be sure to consider your lifestyle and personal needs. Every sober living home is different—in terms of structure and rules. You want to be as comfortable as possible but also feel motivated to get into a healthy daily routine. Do your research and ask questions before committing to pay rent.

While federal guidelines aren’t in place for sober living homes, an accreditation from the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) or the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) International indicates that a sober living home meets certain standards and might help you narrow your search to find a quality residence.

The NARR works with federal government agencies and national recovery organizations to create and promote best practices in creating recovery residences.9 CARF International is a nonprofit accreditor of health and human services that helps providers improve the quality of their services and apply recognized organizational and program standards.10

NARR provides a list of affiliated sober living homes nationwide. AAC can also help you find sober living facilities in Las Vegas or elsewhere in the country.
