What Is Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Colorado?

Anthem BCBS of Colorado is part of the Blue Cross Blue Shield system, which insures 1 in 3 Americans. BCBS was founded in 1929 and has always been driven by the commitment to bring high-quality, affordable care to members. The company provides coverage in Colorado and nationwide.6

BCBS Coverage Levels and Plans

Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Colorado offers several types of insurance plans. Individual and family plans in Colorado are designed to offer a variety of coverage options and be affordable for different needs and budgets.1

All Anthem health plans include doctor visits, hospital care, and mental health benefits, among other things.1 When you choose a Marketplace plan from BCBS of Colorado, you can choose Bronze, Silver, or Gold plans. While each offers the same essential benefits, each differs in how you and BCBS of Colorado share the overall cost.2

Bronze plans: Bronze health insurance plans feature low monthly payments with a higher deductible. These plans may be best for individuals or couples who have few doctor visits and only need or want coverage for medical emergencies.1

Silver plans: Silver health insurance plans have an average monthly payment and lower deductible. These plans may be best for individuals or smaller families with average healthcare needs. Silver plans also offer cost-sharing reductions–financial assistance to help lower the out-of-pocket healthcare costs for individuals and families–for those who qualify.1

Gold plans: Gold health insurance plans have higher montly payments but the lowest deductibles of all the plans. They are best for individuals and families with regular, ongoing healthcare needs. Gold plans typically cover most routine healthcare costs.1

Within each of these BCBS of Colorado plan tiers, Colorado residents can choose one of three basic plan types: Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), and Exclusive Provider Organizations (EPOs).2

PPOs utilize a network of providers who agree to provide discounted pricing for plan members and also assign a primary care physician to direct your overall care within the plan. Referrals are not required to see a specialist. Most plans allow you to see an out-of-network provider, but you may have to pay a larger share of the bill. These plans are only available for groups, not individuals.

HMOs limit non-emergency coverage to providers within the care network. You have a primary care physician and must get referrals from your PCP to see a specialist.

EPOs combine features of PPOs and HMOs. These plans don’t require referrals to see specialists but provide little or no coverage for non-emergency, out-of-network care.

Anthem BCBS of Colorado also has Medicare Advantage plans for those aged 65 or older or who otherwise qualify. These plans provide comprehensive health coverage and offer a broad national network of doctors and hospitals. The Anthem Medicare Advantage HMO plans also allow you to visit doctors and hospitals out of network in Colorado.2

Coverage

Does Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) in Colorado Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Anthem BCBS of Colorado plans–including Marketplace plans and Medicare Advantage–may cover at least part of substance use treatment, depending on your plan and your individual needs. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, Marketplace insurance plans are required to cover essential benefits. This includes services and behavioral health treatment for mental health and substance use disorders.3 The specifics of each plan vary, so it’s important to call the number on the back of your card to understand the coverage details associated with your plan.

What Addiction Treatment Does Anthem BCBS of Colorado Cover?

Most Anthem BCBS of Colorado insurance plans focus on paying for medically necessary care, so it’s important to talk to your doctor about your substance use and work with them on your treatment plan. With that said, Anthem BCBS of Colorado may at least partially cover rehab in Colorado (or elsewhere). Depending on your coverage, your plan may cover at least part of the cost of interventions, including:4

  • Detox. Medically managed detox allows your body to rid itself of substances safely and as comfortably as possible as you experience withdrawal symptoms.
  • Residential or inpatient care. Residential treatment, sometimes called inpatient care, allows you to focus on recovery without the distractions of daily life since you live at the facility for the duration of treatment, which may include individual and group counseling, behavioral therapy, psychoeducation, and medication (if necessary).
  • Outpatient care. Outpatient programs vary in intensity and duration. Treatment looks similar to that of inpatient care but allows you to live at home or in a sober living environment, and come to the treatment center to attend counseling and therapy sessions.
  • Medications. Depending on substance use, certain medications may be used to help manage withdrawal symptoms and prevent cravings. Additionally, medications may be utilized to treat co-occurring mental health disorder symptoms.

Does Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of Colorado Cover Mental Health and Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment?

It’s not uncommon for those who struggle with substance use to also have a mental health diagnosis, and it’s essential to treat both mental health and substance use together to give you the best chance at recovery.5

Co-occurring disorder treatment, an integrated approach that treats substance use and mental health disorders simultaneously, may be covered–at least partially–as part of the mental or behavioral health services offered as part of your Anthem BCBS of Colorado plan.
