Do Rehabs in California Accept Health Net?
You may use your Health Net of California plan to pay for some or all of the costs of addiction treatment. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires that long-term health plans cover 10 essential benefits, which include mental health and addiction treatment.2
Many California insurance plans contract with specific providers to care for its members. These providers are considered to be part of the plan’s network, and this generally means that the facility provides the covered care at a lower cost to the plan and its members than to an individual without insurance or someone paying with an out-of-network plan.3
You can find in-network treatment and verify your insurance coverage by contacting your insurance company directly, or we can do it for you. Contact American Addiction Centers (AAC) by phone at , chat, or text. One of our knowledgeable admissions navigators can review your insurance in just a few minutes and answer any questions you have about rehab.
What Addiction Treatment Does Health Net of California Cover?
Health Net of California covers medically necessary mental health services and substance use disorder treatment. Your primary care physician, mental healthcare provider, or addiction care specialist proposes a treatment plan for you, which is why it’s important to have an honest conversation with your doctor or other healthcare provider about your drug and alcohol use.4
These benefits through Health Net of California generally cover sessions with therapists, psychologists, or psychiatrists as well as treatment that meet your medical needs—from programs and services that last a few hours each day to treatment that includes 24-hour care.4 Treatment for substance use disorder may include:5,6
- Detox. Medically managed detoxification involves clearing your system of drugs or alcohol before you begin a formal treatment program. The process can be unpleasant and—depending on the substance—dangerous. Healthcare professionals can keep you safe and as comfortable as possible during the process.
- Residential or inpatient treatment. Inpatient care allows you to live at the facility for the duration of treatment. Thus, you can focus entirely on your recovery without the distractions—and potential triggers—your home environment may pose.
- Outpatient treatment. Outpatient programs may be used as a point of entry into treatment for some or as a step down from residential treatment for others. Outpatient programs vary in intensity and number of hours spent in treatment each week but all allow you to live at home or in a sober living environment and visit the facility for scheduled counseling and therapy sessions.
Both inpatient and outpatient care look similar, even identical, in terms of services provided. Both use evidence-based behavioral therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), contingency management, and motivational enhancement therapy, to help clients make long-term changes surrounding their attitudes and behaviors related to drug or alcohol use.7
Every insurance plan is different. Some of the services mentioned here may require preauthorization. For instance, Health Net of California requires preauthorization for inpatient and residential treatment (except in emergency situations) as well as partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) and intensive outpatient programs (IOPs). Therefore, it’s important to review your coverage details and your out-of-pocket costs before you commit to a treatment program. Call the number on the back of your insurance card or AAC at to understand the details of your plan.
Does Health Net of California Cover Mental Health and Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment?
It is not uncommon to be diagnosed with a co-occurring substance use and mental health disorder. The standard of care in the situation of co-occurring diagnoses calls for integrated treatment, which means both conditions are treated at the same time.8
Your Health Net of California plan covers both mental health and substance use disorder treatment thanks to the ACA.2
If you struggle with addiction as well as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or other mental illness, ensure that the facility you choose offers co-occurring disorder treatment.
